Shayna General Taheri is a very stubborn man. He chooses to live off the goverment and remain jobless in the U.S. because he is just waiting for his status and job to reappear when the war is over. He was fairly optimistic when it came to believeing he would once again live freely in Kabul, "he donned his gray suit, wound his pocket watch, and waited". Khanum Taheri was a warm-hearted woman with love to give to anyone who would accept it. She had a wonderful singing voice but her husband did not allow her to sing. She did not hide the love she had for people, she wanted everyone to know. She had a strict routine, " Played the lotto once a week and watched Johnny Carson every night....spent her days in the garden", she had a set scheduale. Their relationship is distant, General wanted little to do with her when he had his headaches, a time when most people want their wives to take care of them. At dinners they seemed happy and family occasions throughout the book.
Carole Surfus... Khanum Taheri is someone that you instantly like. She is a people person along with being warm/open-hearted. Unfortunately her husband has brought down her spirits a little by forbidding her to sing in public. She enjoys her scheduled comforts like "play[ing] the lotto once a week and watch[ing] Johnny Carson every night". she also enjoyed "[spending] her days in the garden" and conversing with people. General Taheri is a traditional man. He held a high job back home and he expects to regain it again after the war. Until then, though, he chooses to remain jobless and live off of welfare. He is strict on tradition and retains contact with others who were in higher positions in Kabul.
Allie General Taheri is ridiclus or "petty." "He'd take a bite of the qurma his wife placed before him, sigh, and push it away. 'I'll make you something else,' Khanum Taheri would say, but he'd ignore her, sulk, and eat bread and onion. This made Soraya angry and her mother cry." Is this just the way married men treat their wife or is it just General Taheri? Since he is strict on keeping his culture, I believe that it's probably the first choice. But then again, General Taheri is not a total unlikeable man. I also think it's ridiculous that he doesn't like to listen to Khanum Taheri sing. She loves to sing and she loves Amir because he will listen to her sing. She also loves him because he vanquished her worst fear; that Soraya would never marry. She is a wonderful lady, in my opinion, and if she were American, I would tell her to ditch that man. But, like mentioned before, General Taheri isn't that bad a man. He also likes to brag about how intelligent his Soraya is. He's not a bad father and Mrs. Taheri is a wonderful mother.
