Amir is falling in love with Soraya, and for him to give her this honor is amazing. Yelda is the longest night of the year so Amir and Hassan made it a tradition to stay up late and try to make it to sunrise. Amir saying "Soraya. Swap Meet Princess. The morning sun to my yelda." is his was of saying she is the light of his life. She is what he longs for. He longs to embrace her, just as one embraces the sunlight after many rain storms or hours of darkness.
I definently agree. When he called her that he was using it as a line of affection that he used to make the reader understand how much she means to him and how much he longed to see her face again. He kept replaying the image of her face in his head. On page 149 it says, "Later that night in bed, I thought of the way dappled sunlight had danced in Soraya's eyes, and of the delicate hollows above her collar bone. I replayed our conversation over and over in my head."
Reading what you wrote makes me think of the sappy romance movies and books that I love so much. "She is the light of my life" makes me think of Romeo and Juliet when Romeo says "It is the east, and Juliet is the sun". Reading your post just made me smile and want to pick up another sappy romance novel.
You two are right, of course, that Amir comparing his time away from Soraya a yelda is romantic and shows how much he loves her.
But I think it's much more than that. Did you check out the folklores about yelda?
"Bedeviled moths flung themselves at candle flames, and wolves climbed mountains looking for the sun."
That's Amir, flinging himself at a candle flame, climbing a mountain just to walk past Soraya at the flea market. The highlight of his week is seeing her "sickle-shaped birthmark, her gently hooked nose."
The moment when her "luminous eyes had fleeting held" Amir's changed his life. He is a man obsessed. Each week is torture just to get to the next Sunday, to see his "swap meet princess."
I was thinking the same thing! I thought is was so sweet when he said She is my "morning sun to my yelda" She is what he longs and I find it so cute that he keeps thinking of her. So romantic.
Haley, I totally forgot about the folklore about yelda and it fits Amir's situation.
If this was present time America he would be the little kid in the corner with dorky glasses writing poems and staring lovingly at the most popular girl in school from across the cafeteria. That's the only image of Amir I keep getting. He sits quietly by himself and keeps drawing hearts on a sheet of paper with their initials in them. Its horrible I know but I can't help it. ;)
LaTausha: To Mrs. Matysak, Amir was able to get this poetic romantic side due to Soraya. She inspires him in so many ways, tests him, and is able to accept what she knows. Which may not be a lot but I have a feeling it may go further in depth. Back to the point, Amir is allowed to be romantic no matter how emotionally unattached he is.

Good points Hayley. This is more than just sweet and sappy. Amir is in LOVE. Who would have thought he was was so poetic?
